Every company on this earth has it’s own brand, their own style and their own voice. So goes with Microsoft as well. They also have a significant amount of guidelines and an extensive word list and term collection – all available for you to learn and use from! Use the official Writing Style Guide from Microsoft today!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are you using the term folder<\/em> correctly? Or directory<\/em>? But, isn’t that the same thing? Not if you ask Microsoft. This is a direct quote from their page for the term folder<\/em>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

«In content about Windows, use folder<\/em> to refer to a container for files and other folders. Use directory<\/em> only in content for developers when you need to refer to the structure of the file system or to match the API. For MS-DOS, use directory<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Use folder icon<\/em> to describe the visual representation of a folder. Don’t use directory icon.<\/em>«<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

I’ve been digging through this rabbit hole, and here are some of my other favorites:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Attribute<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Don’t use as a synonym for property<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DNS<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Spell out as Domain Name System,<\/em> not Domain Name Server.<\/em> When discussing the DNS networking protocol, spell out Domain Name System<\/em> on the first mention. When discussing the Windows DNS feature, don’t spell out DNS.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Windows feature is DNS,<\/em> not DNS Server<\/em> or Microsoft DNS Server.<\/em> If you must emphasize that you’re referring to the Windows feature and not to the networking protocol, mention Windows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don’t use dynamic DNS<\/em> or DDNS.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A DNS server (lowercase s<\/em>) is a computer that’s running DNS server software. DNS Server (capital S<\/em>) is the Windows service that appears in the Computer Management console. In general, refer to the service only in a discussion about stopping and starting it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A DNS client (lowercase c<\/em>) is a client of a DNS server. DNS Client (capital C<\/em>) is the Windows service that appears in the Computer Management console. In general, refer to the service only in a discussion about stopping and starting it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

File Explorer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Use instead of Windows Explorer.<\/em> Don’t use an article, such as the,<\/em> to precede File Explorer.<\/em> Don’t shorten to Explorer.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Memory-resident<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Always hyphenate. Use memory-resident program,<\/em> not TSR,<\/em> in content for a general audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In content for a technical audience, it’s OK to use TSR<\/em> as an abbreviation for terminate-and-stay-resident<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Object<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Don’t use object<\/em> as a synonym for item<\/em> or thing<\/em>. Instead, refer to a specific object.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, in object-oriented programming, an object is an instance of a class that contains both methods and data and is treated as one entity. Similarly, in COM-based technologies, an object is a combination of code and data that implements one or more interfaces. In assembly language, object<\/em> refers to the object module, which contains data that has been translated into machine code.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other things<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There are a lot of other things you can delve into here. Things like content planning, design planning, how to write procedure and instructions and so on. Tons of good stuff!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
